Some one thought she was too big for a crib, so Daddy fixed up the toddler rail and now the monkey can climb in and out of her bed all by herself.

18 Month check up

Ok, so Hana is a little over 18 months. Mommy forgot to make an appointment on time. So today we trudged through what was left of the massive 26.9 inches of snow and went to the Doctor. When we first got there Hana thought it was great fun. She always enjoys the waiting room with all the fun toys and little babies to look at. And even when we got into the examination room, she was fine, but once I undressed her and put her on the scale, the memories came flooding back. Cry cry cry. Poor little monkey. She spent most of the exam clamped onto mommy like a little monkey. We had to pry her off and hold her down to try to get her height, which is about 33 inches, and her weight is 26 pounds. I didn't even hear what her head circumference is because both times the nurse told me my little monkey was screaming in my ear. So I'll ask next time. Anyway, so we had two more shots, the last until she is 4 I think. She has to go back for a check up when she turns two, but no shots. Hana is in perfect health. The doctor was very impressed that she says over 75 words, feeds her self with a fork and spoon, eats well, takes two naps, listens to what I tell her, knows the parts of her body, and is always a good baby.

Hana has a great time pointing out all the pictures of Daddy, and Mommy, and hats, and pillows, and bears, and Great Grandma, and chairs. And I point out the rest of you. I think if she knew the names of other people and things, she would notice them too.

Lets go to the Movies

Hana went to her first movie today.
We saw Walk the Line, the Johnny Cash movie. It was great.
Hana enjoyed it, especially the music parts. There was a special premiere of the movie tonight at Daddy's work, but they had a even more special pre-viewing of the film this afternoon. So Hana and Mommy got to go. We got to run up and down the aisles and play ball, and eat animal crackers and bananas, and no one complained, because no one else was there. Yee haw. And even though the movie was more than 2 hours long, and it ran right into nap time, Hana behaved herself very well, no tantrums, no crying, just playing with Mommy and Daddy and enjoying a nice afternoon at the movies.

bed time

Many babies like to touch their mother's hair when they are cuddling before bed. Hana enjoys looking at my ears. Before I put her down for a nap, I hold her in my arms and sing her a little song, and she nestles on my shoulder and we have a little cuddle. Hana is the kind of girl who likes to make sure things are in their correct place, so she usually reaches up and checks my hair, and if it is pulled up, she will pull it down for me. One night when she was doing this she noticed my ear. She ran her finger around the outside of my ear, and then stuck her finger right into my ear canal, and then inspected my ear visually, and then checked out how my glasses sit on the top of my ear, and then swung around and checked the other side. She has done this every night since then. Apparently she gets a great comfort from making sure my ears are still on my head.

Happy Birthday Paige!

Today we went to Paige's first birthday party. She had a huge party with tons of people, and tons of little tiny people. Hana had a fantastic time running around telling every one hello. There was pizza, and cake and a giant bowl of cheerios. Plus toys for the kids to play with, and coloring books and crayons for the older kids, one of which was over heard telling her mother, "see, I told you it was just going to be babies here!" Four year olds are way too mature to hang out with babies. Hana got to take home a bunch of balloons and party favors, and she is very happy with them. She struts around the house with her fantastic Elmo balloon saying, "ba. ba. ba."

Sleep

There are some people out there who think of this morning as a time to get an extra hour of sleep. That special night in the fall when we turn the clock back is the perfect opportunity to feel like you slept in. A chance to feel rested for once. There are so many people who really take advantage of this once a year opportunity. Hana is not one of those people.

Every once and a while, Hana does what I call the scream from 6 to 7. She wakes up at exactly 6am and is completely inconsolable until 7am when she goes back to sleep. Mommy and Daddy were very sad to discover that she chose this morning as one of those special mornings. And somehow, she found out about the clock change, babies are magic that way. So Mommy was up at 6am, trying and trying to get Hana to stop screaming. The first time she did this I was so sleepy that I grabbed her and put her in bed with me and let her scream in my arms for an hour, and then gave up and put her back in her bed where she fell right to sleep. So the second time I just left her in her bed hoping she would put herself back to sleep. I went out and slept on the couch, Hana screamed in her bed until falling asleep around 7am. This morning I took a different approach. Today is Sunday, Daddy's only day to wake up late, that is at 7am instead of 5:30am. So when Hana started screaming at 6am, he was not happy, I was not happy, and of course, the little screamer was not happy. At first I tried to calm her down with her passy, and her pillow, and bear, and book, and all the usual bed stuff. Failing that, I reached across the bed and picked her up. Oh, I forgot to mention, that during these fits, she scoots to the far end of the crib so I can just barely reach her, and screams if I try to touch her. That would go with the totally inconsolable part. Anyway, so I got her into my arms and walked into the kitchen, trying to distract her from screaming. Of course, being in the kitchen made her ask for food. I gave her some banana, and her milk, and she wall still all crazy, and then we walked into the living room, and she asked for a book. So I grabbed all her books, which I keep in a giant ladies hand bag, and we sat down on the couch with a big fuzzy blanket. We read Ten Apples up on Top and then played with the I can dress myself book that lets you practice using a zipper, a button, velcro and putting on a hat and putting things into a pocket. Hana especially likes the zipper. She likes to open zippers, especially those on my purse. As we played with the book, I noticed that Hana was rubbing her eyes. I picked her up and took her back to bed. It was 6:40am. She went right to sleep, and slept until Daddy's alarm went off at 7am.

The other bonus to having the clocks turn back; Hana wanted to take her morning nap at 9am. It better be a long nap. Poor Mommy needs a break.

15 Months

Hana went for her 15 month check up today.
She weighs 24 pounds, 9 ounces.
Is 32.5 inches tall. And her head is 47 cm round.
She has 15 teeth in, and one more on the way.
She is walking and talking and climbing and running, and of course is super cute.

play date

Today Hana had her first play date with a "stranger".
The little boy is named John and lives in our building which will be very good this winter. He just turned one, and he is very cute. And hapa. And even better than that, Hana likes him. Since it was such a cold and rainy day we decided to stay inside and play at John's house. He has some great new toys, including a little ride-on car toy that Hana loved. She is always trying to steal ride-on toys and tricycles from other kids at the playground. We definitely have to get her one as soon as possible. The car was so exciting that Hana was willing to let John play with her stroller in trade. She sometimes lets kids trade with her for her stroller and dolly, but the trade has to be good. No trade, and she is apt to scream if you try to touch her stroller. She is in a possessive stage. I've even caught her yelling something that sounds too much like "mine" when other kids try to touch her stroller at the park. It is all very suspicious. Anyway, so she did very well with John. I've found that she is better with kids who aren't as aggressive as she is. John is just a little younger than Hana, and is still crawling, so she did not feel threatened by him, and so didn't feel the need to yell at him. Although as the day went on and nap time neared, John got his nerve up and stood up next to Hana and they had a nice shoving match. There is something very humorous about two babies shoving each other. They usually throw themselves off balance when they are trying to push the other person away. And then of course, they both cry. All in all it went very well. Plus, he has a dog. Hana loves dogs.

dress up

Hana has always liked jewelry, and purses, and shoes and clothes, and flowers, and pretty much anything girly or fancy. Now she has started playing dress up. The other night we were at a friends house for Shabbos dinner, and their little boy was wandering around in his Mommy's giant high heels. So Hana saw this and found a pair of giant man shoes that were laying around. It was all very hilarious watching the two tiny tots dragging around in giant shoes. The next morning Hana went over to where we keep our shoes by the door and tried to try on my sneakers, but of course we do not wear shoes in the house, and I didn't really want her playing with my nasty sneakers, so I told her not to play with the big shoes. But Hana is much to smart to let that get in her way. She marched into my closet and took out my big fuzzy house slippers and has clomped around in them ever since. Genius. And of course, super cute.

Uh-oh!

Hana is a big talker now. She says hi to every one, and bye, and bye bye Daddy when Daddy goes to work, and Muh for food, and for more food. But much of the time she babbles anyway and she sees something wrong, she says, "up-oh."

Today we went driving to Costco and Brachs Kosher Supermarket and KMart. It was a very big day, and Hana was very good. She took a nice long nap on the way out there and a nice long nap on the way back. Granted she did get very tired around 3pm when we were still at Brachs and she was hungry but sick of the little crackers I had for her to snack on. But she felt much better after a little yogurt, and of course the toy department at KMart didn't hurt her mood any. Hana actually did very well today. She got pajamas for winter, and a horse on a stick, and a popcorn popper push toy, and animal crackers. While we were in KMart Hana had a very large and explosive bowel movement, but luckily Mommy was all prepared and cleaned her up with no trouble. Such a good Mommy. I was feeling so confident on the way home.

Then we went home, and had some supper, and got in the bath. Mommy and Hana were playing peek-a-boo, and Hana was laughing and laughing, and Mommy closed her eyes for one second, and when I opened them, Hana suddenly had a very serious expression on her face. "Uh-oh." A second explosion had occurred while my eyes were closed. There it was. The most disgusting thing you can imagine. Floating all around my baby. With raisins.

Hana loves Daddy.

When teh new season started this weeek at Daddy's theater Hana missed him very much. She kept looking at our front door and asking, "bye Daddy?" But Daddy was at work. For two days in a row he left before she woke up in the morning and came home way after she went to bed. Hana was very sad. So when he finally got a long lunch on Wednesday and was able to come home, Hana spent the entire time sitting on him.

Messy girl

My baby smells like vanilla yogurt.
That could be because she has once again rubbed her breakfast all over her face and in her hair. I feel that would have to give her a bath after every meal to keep her clean. There is just no way to wipe something like egg salad out of a baby's hair.

Big Brute

Hana is a loving child.
Yesterday when she saw a little boy just about her size she went right over to him and gave him a big hug. All the parents thought it was so sweet, isn't she cute? Then the great weight of my massive baby knocked the little boy flat on his back and he smacked his head on the side walk. Hana landed right on top of him. It is hard to apologize for some thing like that.

Coney Island Photo Booth

Coney Island Photo Booth

Fun

Yesterday was Daddy's last day off before the new season started and he announced he would like to do something fun. We didn't know where we were going, but we were getting in the car and going somewhere. We got in the car and ended up in Brooklyn at Auntie and Uncle's house. Hana thought it was all very exciting since she loves new places and she loves Auntie and Uncle. She was amazingly well behaved in a house that is not at all baby proof. The one thing she was interested in that we had to move out of her reach was the big jar full of coins. Other than that, she didn't really bother any of the other stuff that was laying around. I was very proud. Then we went outside, and the community garden was open, so we went in. Auntie lives right next door to a huge garden that is usually locked, but yesterday there were some folks there working, and they told Auntie that for $20 she could become a member and have a key to the garden and a plot of land if she wanted to grow her own vegetables. Hana is really looking forward to helping Auntie in her new garden. She tested out the tomatoes and touched the flowers, but she especially liked the little gnome that lives there. She spent a good five minutes staring at him and telling him little secrets. He is her special friend.

After the garden we all got into Uncle's car and drove down to Coney Island. We had originally intended to go to the Irish festival that was going on, but by the time we got there we decided that we might as well just enjoy Coney Island. Auntie and Uncle went to Nathan's, and then we all walked down the board walk, and looked at the ocean, and then we just happened to be at the kiddy park, and Hana really wanted to go on some rides, so we went in. Now there was a cool breeze yesterday, and we didn't' bring the stroller, so Hana was dressed in jeans and her rubber boots for walking all over, and she was already pretty tired out by the time we got her up onto the horse, who's name was 'Mom', but it didn't take her long to figure out just how it worked, and what she was supposed to do. Hana thought the Merry-go-round was great. She held onto the poll all by herself, and even shoved my hand off when I wanted to hold on. It was her horse. I was allowed to hold on to the back of the horse. The first ride she spent staring at the center of the ride where the music was coming from, and the second ride she turned outward and watched the people go round and round. Hana is an excellent rider. The horses have little seat belts to keep the babies on, but Hana sat very well on her own, never leaning over to the side, and she looked fantastic in her jeans and boots. My little cow girl. Then when we were done she climbed off with out a fuss like some of the other kids who screamed when their Mommy's pulled them off of the horses. We went back to meet Daddy and then Auntie said she had more ride tickets, and so Auntie took Hana on the little whale ride. There was little Hana, with Auntie, and a bunch of four year olds on kiddy ride. Fantastic. Hana thought it was great. She laughed and squealed and loved it all. Auntie seemed to get a little motion sick from the whale going up and down and in circles. After that we all tried to shove into a photo booth, but there was not enough room for us all, so just the girls took a picture. And then we walked back down the board walk and checked out the games. Daddy and Uncle and Auntie tried "shoot the star" in another futile attempt, and then Mommy tried to make a basket, and although I was totally unsuccessful, they gave Hana a tiny little bear anyway. She was very Happy. When we were all worn out, we got back into the car and drove back to Auntie's house and had pizza for dinner. When we finally got into the car to head home Hana was asleep before we even left the block. She was exhausted from such a big day. But, she did have fun. And so did every body else.

In the sand box

Today we went to the park with Paige and her Mommy.
We went in the sand box as usual for us, but it was a first for Paige. Paige is 10 months old now. She brought her shovel and pail set which she let Hana play with. And of course Hana was happy to have it. Paige played with the sand; letting it slip through her fingers, and Hana collected all the toys and stacked them up. Then she took one and offered it to Paige, and Paige took it, and then Hana wanted it back. This happened a few times, until Paige decided that she would like to keep the toy for more than the second that Hana was willing to let it be out of the pile. And so the girls had a tug of war. But luckily Paige's Mommy was able to quickly diffuse the situation by offering a substitute toy so both girls could have one. And then Hana grabbed that toy from Paige too. Then another girl who was Hana's age arrived, and she seemed to have the same idea that Hana had of collecting all the toys. Poor Paige was stuck between the two big girls who stole all her toys. I hope it wasn't too traumatic for her. One year olds can be very bossy.

shopping

Today we went shopping.  Mommy, Daddy and Hana took the train down to Syms and got new clothes for fall.  Tax free week rules.  Then since it was such a fantastic day, we decided to walk home.  Plus this gave Daddy an opportunity to stop at Home Depo, his favorite store.  Now on the best of days Hana does not really enjoy shopping, unless it's at Costco.  For some reason she always behaves at Costco.  Anyway, so we took turns entertaining our little beast while shopping and it worked out ok.  She only did a little yelling, and then it was mainly because she had eaten all of the snacks that I brought for her and was still hungry.  Plus we shopped into her nap time and past.  By 4:45pm we were finally on our way home, and Hana was very tired and hungry and since it was Sunday there were no fruit venders on the street.  I was just contemplating going into a bodega and paying 50 cents for a banana when we happened on my favorite old vegetable place which i thought had closed down, but had apparently just moved to mid-town.  Hurray.  And of course, they had fantastic fruit that was totally ripe and super cheap. We got a bunch of nectarines and washed one off as best as we could and gave it to the beast.  With in a minute the fruit was demolished and the baby was fast asleep in the stroller.  Excellent work Mommy.

new games

Hana has discovered a few new games.  The first has been going on for about a week.  She has long admired the magnets on the fridge, and would occasionally gotten one off, but last week she figured out that they stick back on after you pull them off.  And so I pulled all of the baby sized magnets down so she can reach them, and she pulls them all off and then sticks them back on, and then pulls them off again and checks to see what else in the house they will stick to.  She discovered that the dishwasher, and the air conditioners and the front door all work, the rest of the house does not, but she keeps trying.

The second game was discovered on Friday afternoon while she was taking her bath.  As you may know, Daddy is in the process of renovating the bathroom.  Instead of a faucet in the tub, we have a plain pipe dispensing the water.  When I giver Hana her bath, I let the water run so I can get fresh water to rinse her off with.  Hana is often drawn to this running water, and she likes to stick her hands in it and catch it with her cup.  This time she did something new.  She stuck her little finger directly into the pipe causing the water to spray directly into her face.  Well, we all know that Hana loves sprinklers, and well, lets just say that she has never laughed harder than she did when she realized that she could get the water to spray into her face on command.  She spent a good five minutes squirting herself over and over and squealing with laughter every time.  Apparently it is incredibly funny to attack oneself.

The third game was fun in a fort.  I draped a sheet over a few chairs and dragged her dolls and blocks and puzzles in and we had a good old time playing in the fort all day.  Even baby cat joined us nestling in a little cubby where the sheet hung over the edge of the couch.  This was a good place for her so she could enjoy the fort with out being attacked by Hana.  And by the way, everything is more fun when done in a fort.

sand box

Today we went to the playground at Carl Schurz Park.  As usual we went to play in the sand box first.  Right after we got there, another little girl about Hana's size arrived with her parents.  She seemed a little shy, but her parents seemed intent on having her play in the sand.  She had a big bucket full of shovels and various little toys, but she was not touching it.  Just sort of clinging to her father.  Now Hana never misses an opportunity to say hello to another kid.  So she stood up and walked over to the little girl and dropped the toy she was playing with in the little girl's bucket.  The parents seemed shocked.  They were so nervous, as if Hana were some sort of plague that they hoped would go away soon.  I was very confused by this weird reaction, but decided to ignore it and let Hana have her fun trying to play with the little mousy girl.  The father took one of the little shovels and started to try to get his kid to shovel sand into the bucket, but she still didn't really want to play.  Hana tried to touch the girl's bucket, and the father made this whiney little "please" whimper, so I had Hana let go of the bucket.  Then a boy about two years old came over and asked if he could play too.  The parents told him they weren't really playing anything, but the boy seemed intent on joining them.  He grabbed a shovel and started to help the dad fill the bucket with sand.  His mother saw him from across the sandbox and told him not to bother the people, and then the parents say, "oh no, he's delightful."  And then proceed to let him totally take over the bucket and shovel and they start playing with this boy as if he was their own.  Their own child just kept standing there staring.  It was totally bizarre.  I had long since moved Hana away from the madness, and dug her a lovely hole to sit in and gave her other toys to play with.  She had a great time.  She likes to throw sand up in the air.  Most of it lands on her head.  And when she was really filthy from the sand, we went over to play in the sprinklers.  I let her run barefoot since I have decided the reason she tripped last time was because of the little pink sandals she was wearing.  I need to get her better water shoes for running through the sprinklers.

new things

Hana has started making new facial expressions.  She sneered at me yesterday.  Lip up to the side, half of nose crinkled.  Lots of crazy little faces.  And she is walking all over the place.  Hardly any crawling.  And she says "oh? ooohh!" when ever she sees something interesting.  Her desire to contain things, has evolved.  She used to be happy with a tupperware to put little toys in.  Then it was a box, then a purse, and now she has moved to hiding things under the rocking chair cushion.  It is her secret hiding place.  Although I have also seen her put things into Daddy's box of floor tiles, and into the laundry basket.  And yesterday I found her cup in her toy box.  I guess she wasn't thirsty anymore.  And of course, the love of jewelry continues.  She now wears her jade bracelet all day.

my first shiner

Today we went to our friend Abbie's wedding.  She is a hapa girl I met when I was working at the Columbia/Barnard Hillel.  She is Jewish-Japanese, raised in Japan.   The wedding was at Ramath Orah on the West Side, which has a really nice kids play room on the side of the social hall.  So Hana got to play with tons of toys while Mommy got to spend some time with the grown-ups at the reception.  It worked out perfectly.  That is except for one little incident.  Daddy was staying with Hana in the play room and he said she was doing just fine; not really fussing at all unless I stopped in to say hi.  I could see that she was a little fussy and her face was a little pink, and then as I looked closer, I noticed that her eye was swelling up and turning shades of purple.  Very calmly I asked Daddy how she got her black eye. He said he didn't really know, that she had been crying, and he guessed she fell or something, but he did not see her fall and so did not know what exactly hit her eye.  But, besides the swollen eye, which I hid by letting some of her bangs hang down into her face, Hana had a great time at the wedding.  She played with toys, and danced to the great klezmer music, and played with the huge Shepard seeing eye dog, and had a good time visiting with all the kids and old folks who thought she was "soo cute!"  Of course.  Plus the photographers and videographers seemed to be very interested in her.  They must have snapped over 50 pictures of her playing over the course of the afternoon.  What can I say, she's a movie star.

Play date

Today Anna came over to play. It was the first time that I had to watch the two girls by myself.  At first it was very easy.  Anna and Hana were so happy to see each other and had a great time playing with all of Hana's toys.  But after 20 minutes or so, Anna realized that all of the toys were for babies.  Anna is 3 years old.  She wanted to play catch, so I played with her, but then Hana wanted my attention and climbed on my lap.  Then at lunch time Anna didn't really want to eat anything.  I guess it is hard for a little person to adjust to a new babysitter who doesn't know what kinds of foods she likes.  She ate a little bit of the apple and had some orange juice.  She didn't want a sandwich, she said she had eaten one already. After lunch we decided to watch Lilo and Stich, but the girls weren't really interested.  Then Hana wanted another nap, and Anna was bored, so I put Hana down and took out the coloring books and let Anna color.  She seemed to enjoy that more than playing with baby toys.  Then Hana woke up early from her nap and needed to be held, but Anna wanted to look out the window.  It was very tiring watching  two kids at the same time.

Walking at the park

This morning Hana woke up at 6:45am, and decided to play for a while. Then at 8am she went back to bed and slept until 10am. I was a little surprised that she slept for two hours, but she has been pretty tired lately. She's doing a lot of mental growing, and physical development with her walking skills, so I guess she needs lots of rest. At 10am we had breakfast of yogurt, Cheerios and apple, and then we decided to go to the park. Since it was pretty cloudy out, and I wasn't sure how long she would be before she got tired again, (she usually naps at 11am), we went to the little playground at Asphalt Green. There are swings and monkey bars and three slides, and a bunch of those climbing posts for the kids to play on, and the ground is covered with spongy rubber stuff. As we rolled along towards the park Hana saw the other kids playing and let out her squeal of delight, and then looked up at me with a question in her eyes. "Yes,'" I told her. That's where we are going. She bounced up and down in her stroller. First we went on the swings and then when Hana was tired of that, I put her down on the ground and let her walk around the playground on her own. This was her first time walking around at the park, and she thought it was great. She walked right up to two little boys who were playing and one of them gave her a deaf leaf. She thought it was great and reached down to pick up more of them. She tried to give one to the other boy, but he was very shy and just stared at her. His nanny was there and kept trying to get him to play, but he was not interested. But that did not bother Hana. She was perfectly Happy. Smiling at everyone, and laughing and playing with the leaves. Then she saw the climbing posts and tried to climb up. She had a hard time at first because she was trying to lift her whole leg up and put her foot directly onto the step, but after a while she figured out that she could get up by using her knee to climb up. She got up three levels of steps and at the top we discovered there was a slide going down the other side. And so Hana slid down. Hurray. She thought it was great. And when she got to the bottom she turned around and tried to climb back up the slide for a while, but she realized that it was not going to work, so she turned around climbed off the slide. Next we walked all over the playground looking at the other kids. Some little girls were playing with a rubber ball and Hana really wanted to play with it too, but they were older and did not want to play with a baby. I will have to remember to bring Hana's ball next time so she can play with it. After that it looked like it was going to rain, so we headed home, had some lunch, and then a nap.

Walk walk walk

Hana can walk.
She walked across the room today.
She likes to walk.
She walks with Mommy, and she walks with Daddy, and if you come by her she will walk with you too. But if no one is there, she will walk by herself. Unless she decides to crawl. Sometimes she still crawls.
