Sleeping in the car

bye bye

Hana has started saying bye.
It is very cute. When it is time to say Goodbye she waves her little hand and very clearly says,"bye". Her words so far are: bye, hi, mum mum (food/water/milk), Da (Daddy), uh-oh, and ah ah ah (don't touch). If you notice there is no word for Mommy listed. Perhaps that is because I am always with her. And if I happen to be away for a second when she wants me, she just calls for food.

And the ninth tooth is coming in.

Yuck-O

For about a week now Hana has had a poopie problem.  She has been going a lot.  It started with the runs, she went six times that day.  Since then she has gone two to three times a day, except that yesterday we were out in the car most of the day, and since she does not really like to go in her car seat, she waited until we got home, and then just went once.  Well this morning we all had to pay the price.

6:30am    screaming baby, Mommy ignoring it, hoping it will go back to sleep
6:45am    screaming baby, Mommy wishing she could ignore it, definitely not sleeping
6:46am    Half asleep Mommy stands up and stares in horror , baby still screaming
6:47am    Mommy gives up trying to wipe the baby clean
6:48am    Mommy and super pooper in tub getting a wash down
6:55am    Baby nice and clean, resting happily on Mommy's pillow.....Mommy cleaning off nasty poop covered crib.
7:00am    Clean baby sleeping happily in clean crib, Mommy staring at nasty pile of bedding

I called the Doctor again.  She thinks it may be a virus.  Hana is now on a special diet of binding foods.  Brown rice, bananas, fresh apple, and some cheese, meat or eggs, and vegetables.  If the problem doesn't go away by Wednesday, we have to go to the Doctor.

Growing up

Hana is growing up. This morning as I tried to feed her she grabbed the spoon away from me and fed herself, then gave me the spoon back for a refill. She ate all her food this way, and you could tell that she knew she was doing something new, she knew she had learned something. I saw that same look on her face last week when she figured out how velcro works. She was playing with her stuffed monkeys who have velcro hands which she is always trying to pull apart. All of a sudden, she lifted the fingers and peeled apart the velcro. Then put it back and tried again. She learns very fast. And if you are lucky enough to be right there when she makes a new discovery, you can witness the wheels of her fresh little mind clicking into place.

Hana has also gotten much stronger. The other day when Daddy was holding her and wanted to put her down, she clung on so tightly that he didn't need to hold her up at all. Just like a little monkey holding on to the back of his mommy. I have tried to recreate this on myself, but she knows that I wont really put her down, so she doesn't bother to hold on so tight. Another thing I have noticed is that she is not as interested in nursing lately. She still wants to nurse, but not for very long, and many times just one side, and if there is something more exciting she will skip the milk all together. I suppose this is what they call child initiated weaning. I have started reading up on how to go about weaning a baby. Not that I have a cut off date in mind, I just figured that I should start thinking about it, especially if she has already begun the process.

And walking is getting closer. Hana now stands around the house very well, and takes one or two steps on her own quite frequently, although usually while yelling. At first it was just when she really wanted you and you were standing just out of her reach, but now I see her doing it when I am across the room and she just wants to get somewhere. She starts off standing and takes a couple of steps, then falls and crawls the rest of the way. Any day now.

The last big change is that she doesn't care if I'm in the room or not. It used to be that when I left a room I had to take her with me or she would yell, or at least follow after me. Now she leaves the room on her own to go off exploring, and even when I call her to come with me when I am going into the next room, if she is busy playing, she does not bother to move. Just gives me a look that she is totally fine where she is, thanks anyway Mom. My big girl.

Love Daddy

Today Hana took her afternoon nap a little late, so by the time she woke up just after 5pm, Daddy was arriving home from work. Now she always is excited by his arrival, giving at least a little,"huh?" with a look and some sort of squirm or wiggle if not a full blown dash towards the door. Today was no different, except the initial happy sounds were followed by the terrible whining and complaining sounds that come out of Hana when she is really tired and fussy. This of course really messed up the whole cuteness of the greeting, until I realized what exactly it was that she was nagging about. Daddy's usual response to her greeting is a hello and making silly faces, and then he goes off to wash up before playing with her. Apparently this was not enough for her today. Today she wanted a hug. I lifted her up to Daddy's face so she could give him a kiss, and she wrapped her arms around his neck and rested her head on his shoulder and had her self a little cuddle. Dirty hands or not, she was going to get some love. He seemed to enjoy it too. Baby hugs are wonderful.

runs

No, she hasn't learned to run. Hana has the runs. She woke up at 5:50am with a stinker, and has gone three more times since then. I talked to the doctor to make sure that there was no connection to her immunizations from yesterday, which there is not. Dr. Kessler recommended extra fluids, some pedialite or chamomile tea. So I am making Hana some tea. I hope she likes it.

Little helper

For a while now I have been dreaming of the day when Hana would start pulling her weight around here.  Today she finally did, well, she pushed it.  Since she loves pushing around the laundry cart, I decided to fill it up with laundry and let her push it down the hall to the laundry room.  She thought it was the greatest thing ever.  I walked in front and she came trudging after with the cart all loaded up with her dirty clothes.  It was fantastic.  I admit I had to help a little because she is not so skilled at keeping the cart going in a straight line, and of course, she gets distracted very easily, but for the most part, she pushed the cart all the way down the hall, all by herself.  And she thought it was fun. Ha!

One Year Doctor Visit

This morning we went to the doctor for Hana's one year check up.  Hana is now 30 inches tall, or 2 ' 6''.  She is 23.5 pounds and her head is 46 centimeters around.  She got two vaccinations for Measles-Mumps-Rubella, and Chicken Pox.  The nurse said that some children will get a mild case of Chicken Pox from the vaccination, but nothing like the real thing.  Hana cried big crocodile tears with gasping cries when she got her shots, but she recovered quickly and hasn't seemed to be bothered by it since.  She is in perfect health, and still super cute.

Party

Today we had a little birthday party for Hana.
Hana's little friend Anna came over with her Mommy and Daddy, and a couple of other old people. We had balloons and pizza and cake and presents and watermelon. It was great. Hana and Anna had a great time playing with all the new toys and books, and eating cake and pizza. Daddy's friend asked if we hired a clown to come entertain the kids, and we looked over and found Anna dancing around on the couch swinging the balloons all around, and Hana watching her and squealing with delight. Free clown service. Just give a three year old a bunch of helium balloons. Fantastic. Then we opened the presents; Hana got a bunch of clothes, and a hapa dolly, and a baby telephone. And we made hand prints of the girls, which did not turn out very well, but that's ok. It was fun anyway. Any excuse to stick your hand in paint and smear it around is a good one.
And then the girls retired to the couch and looked at books. They are so cute together. I definitely recommend having only one friend over for a kids birthday party. All the fun with none of the chaos. And when it is nap time, every one goes home. Good planning Mommy.

School Bus

Unwrapped

Hana has opened her first wrapped present. I had it sitting on the couch, which of course means that she would want to know what it was. So this morning she was looking at it, and sort of touching the wrapping paper and looking at me like she knew she was doing something wrong. I kept telling her that it was for her, and it was ok for her to have it, but she still seemed a little hesitant. So I put it on the floor next to her, and I walked away for a second, and when I looked back she had torn the paper off the top of it and was pointing to the little school bus inside with a very excited look on her face. By then of course I had to assist her by getting the bus out of the box. Toys these days are strapped into their boxes with millions of wire twisty ties. I kept waiting for her to go ahead and play with the wrapping paper and then the box, but she just waited patiently for me to free the bus. I handed her the toy and off she went, looking at all the parts and taking out the little people inside, opening and closing the doors. She hasn't figured out exactly how to make it work, but she does enjoy sliding it along the floor sideways.

Books

Today we went to the book store to redeem a gift card that Hana got for a present. I couldn't decide if I wanted to get books that she would like now, or books that she would like later. Plus, I couldn't decide if I should get the standard classic books that kids like, or more interesting stuff that I just happened to see. I always have a problem buying books at the bookstore because I know that you can get the exact same book for way less if you buy it used. I guess I learned that from my Dad. So After all that pondering, I ended up with five new board books. Put me in the Zoo, My First Shabbat board Book, Touch and Feel Animal Colors, Five Little Lady Bugs, and Feely Bugs. At bed time I brought out the new books for Hana to read. She really likes the books where you can touch the different textures. I read to her while she endlessly flipped through Feely Bugs, and Touch and Feel Animal Colors. She likes to look though books on her own instead of looking at the book that I am reading to her. She flips through the pages and chatters away to herself as if she were reading aloud. Very cute.

Water baby

Hana loves puddles just like her Mommy.

SPRINKLERS!!

The best way to deal with a hot day.
Happy birthday Hana Leah!

Happy Birthday Hana Leah!

Hurray!
Hana is now one year old.
This morning Hana woke up, and had blueberries and vanilla yogurt for breakfast and then played with her Daddy. We gave her some presents, and she looked at the ones that were not wrapped, and checked out the tags, and then looked that the wrapped presents, and played with the bows, and then threw them all on the floor and crawled away. Then she decided to put on her favorite pair of rubber boots and push the laundry cart up and down the hallway. And then it was nap time. After her nap, Obachan called with birthday wishes for Hana, and then we had some lunch and then we went to the playground to meet Paige and her Mommy. It was a super hot day so we played in the sprinklers. It was very cold but the girls loved it. Then we packed up and headed home. We stopped off at Paige's house and Paige gave Hana her birthday presents. Hana seemed to remember being at Paige's house and ignored the wrapped presents and went right over to the toy box and started playing. Paige on the other hand thought the wrapped presents were great and un-wrapped the gift she had gotten for Hana, and then ate the tissue paper. Then we came home, had another nap, and then Daddy came home and ate dinner with Hana, and we tried to get her to open more presents, but she was still not interested. And then bath time, and a call from Grandma, and then off to bed.

Piano

Hana loves playing the piano.
When we were on Maui we played Aunty Jan's piano, and Hana seemed to like it a little bit, but only for a little while. And Daddy sometimes let her play the grand piano onstage at the Y, and she now seems to love the little baby piano at Paige's house. And when we were at Hana's friends Chiam and Devorah's house, she saw they had a piano and she kept insisting that I put her on the stool so she could play. She of course played with all the other toys as well, but she kept going back to the piano. I think Mommy has to get a piano for Hana. Hm.

The Park

Today Anna and her Mommy came over and we gave her the present we got for her in Hawaii. It was a little hula skirt set with floral top, flower for her hair and shell lei. Very fancy. It was just the right gift for a three year old. She seemed to really like it.

And since it was a nice day, we decided to take the girls to the big playground at the park. Anna who is a big girl did not bring her stroller, but the walk was pretty long, and she was obviously getting tired, so Hana offered to share her stroller. We put Anna on the bottom, and Hana on her lap, and the seat belt on the top and off we went. It was great. Anna loved it because she got to hold the baby on her lap, (and got a free ride), and Hana really didn't seem to notice the difference. She sits on people's laps all the time.

When we got to the park we played in the sand box. Anna and Hana played very nicely together. No screaming or tantrums, or hitting or crying. It was amazing. And when Anna wanted something that Hana had, she offered her a different toy instead. Such a good girl. And then when we were all hot and dirty we went over to the sprinklers to cool of and wash off. Hana of course demanded to be walked all through the sprinklers where the big kids were, so silly Mommy had to take off her shoes and wade out with her and we both got very wet. But it was fun. And since it was 92 degrees today, I didn't really mind getting to play in the sprinklers.

And then we packed the girls up again, all nice and wet and sandy, and rolled home. They ate animal crackers and fruit loops on the way, and shared nicely. Anna held the bag and they both helped them selves. And when Hana ran out of fruit loops, and the bag was empty, she checked Anna's hand to see if she had any more in there. Very cute. Baby

And now we are home, and Hana is taking her nap. She went to sleep with out any protest.

Catch up

Hana seems to be getting back to New York time finally. She still has some crazy separation anxiety when I put her down for a nap, but for the most part she sleeps. For a few nights it was if she just could not sleep unless I laid down next to her. I tried letting her cry it out, but after 45 minutes of screaming I just couldn't take it anymore. But last night she went to be with out a big fuss, so hopefully she is getting back to her happy self.

She has kept the new skill that she learned from Shaydie of whining and throwing little tantrums when she does not get her way, usually when you take something away from her that she wants. Like the remote for example. I seem to have lost her little remote somewhere. But for the most part this behavior is only really bad when she is tired and grouchy.

And she is still dropping food on the floor when she eats, so you have to watch her and only give her a couple of pieces at a time or she will lose her whole lunch to the cat who happily sits below her chair and picks out what she wants. She prefers the nice chicken breast pieces over the nectarine and spinach. Smart cat. Today Hana had strawberries and lasagna for lunch. She did not drop any of it. Hm...

And she is still cruising furniture and walking with assistance. But she is doing a lot of standing up on her own. She likes to stand on the bed, and when holding a toy. For some reason it is easier to balance when she is focusing on playing with the toy.

And she is still super cute.

Excuses

Well, if you haven't guess it from my lack of posts over the last few months, my computer access has not been the best, so I apologize. Hopefully some day my computer will be fixed and I can get back to my daily updates. Until then, I will do my best.
